Located at Jefferson Island, Louisiana, this project emphasizes a relationship between site, history, and structure. Jefferson Island, formally an industrial site, was home to a salt mine, oil rig and sulfur extraction plant prior to 1980. However, an oil drilling disaster significantly altered the environment, changing the lake from fresh to brackish water.

All industry halted after the disaster, and the site transformed to become the natural oasis it is today. Making use of the old train line, this project integrates the site’s industrial history with its current nature setting.

Three structures built off the train tracks provide views of the historical site and the scenic beauty. Guests arrive into an open space where they can engage in various programs now offered on Jefferson Island.
