A sculpture studio project, Carved is dedicated and inspired by memories of my adopted grandmother, Carol, who lived in a small bungalow on the sand dunes of Long Island, NY. When I was a kid my family and I would drive out to visit Carol and her cats. The walk from her house to the beach entailed going through a natural sandy floored tunnel filled with spruce trees and pine needles. As a young child, I found this underpass journey spooky and mysterious. Carved captures the darkness and fear I felt with a small bit of reassuring light emerging from the branches on the other side of the tunnel.

To achieve this goal, the sculpture was first carved with foam to create negative space. Then a plaster pour filled the box and the foam was removed. The primary tunnel is displayed through the undulating path in the center of the sculpture with the dunes of the surrounding environment around the perimeter. The sculpture is mirrored, allowing the piece to be displayed from multiple vantage points.
