Quarry in the SeaJefferson Island Core Studio
Tulane School of Architecture
Instructor: Andrew Liles

Located in the E.L. Smith Quarry, in Barre, Vermont, this project depicts a small studio located inside a quarry. The quarry, one of the deepest in the world, is a large exporter of granite and a key source of income to the near town of Barre.

Within a sea of trees, this quarry creates a relationship between tectonic and stereotomic qualities. The structure bridges a connection between the trees and quarry and as one descends into the studio, the landscape translates from tectonic to stereotomic architecture.

The studio offers a range of views and the natural light flowing into the space, creates a sense of openness despite the surrounding walls of granite.
